Why Does Nighttime Eating
Happen?
Nighttime
eating is one of the major obstacles which people face while
trying to control their overeating problems. While many of us
tend to exhibit a great degree of control over what we eat
during the day, the night is an extremely vulnerable
time.
But why is that? Why does nighttime eating
happen in the first place?
There are a number of reasons why people tend
to eat more at night.
For one thing, when we get home after a hard
day's work we tend to be hungrier than at any other time of the
day. Furthermore, at home we have our favorite foods within
easy reach in the fridge or the pantry.
During the day, you spend most of your
time working. Even when you go out to lunch, there's a limited
time to eat and it usually comes with a much heftier price tag
than that which came with your grocery shopping for home. These
2 factors combine make daytime overeating much harder and
inconvenient. The bad news is that a lot of people make up for
it at night. Big time.
A lot of nighttime eaters begin to dream of
their favorite foods before they even get home. During the
commute from work, you can already taste what you're going to
eat, and imagine how it will look on your plate. This makes
resisting nighttime craving that much harder.
We are also socially programmed to eat at
night. I know that in my family dinner was a time in which we
all got together and ate heavily. Even when you mature and even
if you live alone, those childhood habits stick and continue to
influence your actions.
A lot of people blame the media and
commercials for emotional
eating and overeating in general. I won't blame
nighttime eating on the media, but I will place some of the
blame on TV. Watching TV, which is something a lot of us do at
night, is an invitation to overeat. There's nothing easier to
do than open a bag of chips and eat without thinking in front
of the TV. One of the best ways to stop nighttime eating is to
actually watch less TV.
Nighttime eating is nothing but normal. We
all tend to eat more at night. The key is to do it in
moderation and not overindulge.
